ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture involves the use of thin stainless-steel disposable needles at one or more points on the body. The needles stimulate the body’s tissues to activate neurological, muscular, endocrine, immune and inflammatory systems. By activating these systems it promotes healing by bringing the body back to a state of balance to alleviate pain, provide stress relief and promote physical and psychological relaxation.

JAPANESE ACUPUNCTURE

With Japanese acupuncture the needles are very thin and are inserted superficially, which is great for highly sensitive people! The process of diagnosing each person is largely based upon touch. The abdomen is palpated for tender/uncomfortable spots, and the points chosen to needle are those that alleviate the discomfort at those locations. This system allows the practitioner to use the patient’s body as a feedback system to determine not only root causes to their disharmonies, but is able to effectively treat the cause – not just the symptoms!

ELECTROACUPUNCTURE

With electroacupuncture needles are inserted on specific points on the body, and then an electrical device is attached to them that generates continuous electrical pulses using the small clips that you see in the picture to your left. This method of acupuncture is quite helpful to treat various types of pain, muscle spasms, and neurological conditions to name a few. The electrical impulses are adjusted by the practitioner so that you will not feel them.

HERBAL MEDICINE

When prescribed correctly, herbal medicine provides a safe and effective way to treat disharmonies without creating unwanted side-effects. Based upon the diagnosis of each person made by their practitioner, herbal medicine helps to bring the body back into balance. Depending on each person’s current condition they may or may not be prescribed herbal medicine. There are various ways to take herbal formulas: tea, granules, pills, tinctures or topically. This form of medicine should only be taken under the supervision of a professionally trained herbalist.

CUPPING

Cupping is placing cups on the skin which produce a suction. This method of treatment is an effective way to treat pain, relax muscle spasms, increase local blood circulation, detoxify local tissue, and treat the common cold. Most people enjoy cupping and it has been described as feeling like a massage.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

Each person is born with their own unique constitution that makes their dietary journey different from anyone else. Different kinds of foods can benefit or harm specific constitutions. So, what is good for your friend, may be problematic for you. Depending on your distinct constitution and pattern diagnosed by your practitioner, you will be educated about what foods to incorporate or remove from your diet to benefit your health.

GUA SHA

Gua sha is also commonly referred to as “scraping”. This method of treatment involves some type of oil or other form of lubrication, and typically a Chinese soup spoon. The technique involves repeated pressed strokes with the spoon  over the area lubricated. This method helps to relieve muscle pain and helps at the onset of the common cold. The basis behind this method is to stimulate newly oxygenated blood flow to the area treated to promote metabolic cell repair, regeneration, healing and recovery. One way to look at this is that the muscle pain that you are experiencing is a bruise that is underneath your skin. Gua sha allows the practitioner to bring the bruise up to the surface where it can be expressed and healing can then take place.

MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion, or “moxa” is the burning of the herb mugwort on or near the skin. The heat from the moxa has the ability to penetrate the skin deeper than other heat therapy methods, such as a heating pad, in order to be able to increase blood circulation. It is used when a person’s presentation contains aspects that need to be warmed or “dried out”. Other benefits of moxa are that it alleviates pain, relaxes muscle spasms, increases energy, helps with some skin irritations, and can calm anxiety.

MAGNET THERAPY

One type of magnet therapy commonly used at Vivir are diode rings. These are copper plated magnets that initiate the movement of Qi (the body’s energy that your practitioner works with) in the channels of the body. One of the amazing ways that these magnets are used is to reduce inflammation in the body.

LIFESTYLE COACHING

Oriental medicine associates specific behaviors and lifestyle habits to either benefiting or harming each person’s constitution. In every culture there are “norms” that may be beneficial for some, but for others it may be the basis behind their disharmony. Each person is born with a genetic predisposition that could make certain habits or lifestyle patterns harmful. Your practitioner will coach you on aspects of your life that may be contributing to your disharmony.
